Australian Manaslu Expedition 2002

Update # 4

This report is current at 8:30 pm (Sydney time) Thursday, April 25

The team is presently tucked up at Advanced Base Camp (ABC - which I have previously referred to as Base Camp) where it is snowing heavily. To the extent there is any pattern to the weather it is fine mornings followed by snow in the afternoons.

It has been a very hard day today, with the first carry from ABC (4700 m) to Camp 1 at 5,500 metres, and the team is pretty tired. The carry was "twice as hard" as the carry into ABC They plan to have another carry to Camp 1 tomorrow where they will stay overnight and have a rest day prior to the first carry to Camp 2.

Camp 2 is planned for 6700 metres and it is also expected to be pretty tough going.

All are well. Henri has been a bit seedy over the past couple of days (tummy bug) but is much better now. All members, including the trekkers, suffered from minor stomach pains ( with accompanying symptoms which I will not describe here) at some time in the journey but recovered quickly. It seems to be a normal part of acclimatising to the Himalayan environment.

In other news from the mountain the American team had their first climb to Camp 1 on Tuesday.
